NASGW News Archives
President’s Message: Things are looking up
In what’s been a pretty tough market, things may be starting to look up. At least that’s what I’m hearing as I’ve been traveling over the summer. NICS checks have reached new heights recently and that’s translating into some cautious optimism from many of our industry’s top manufacturers of guns, ammo and optics. I’ve also paid a visit to some of the nation’s top 2-step distributors and key members of the NASGW, who echo this feeling. Thank you all for your incredible hospitality and your time.
Chairman’s Commentary: August 2015
Two-step distribution is needed now more than ever before. In times when market demands are fluctuating as they are in our industry, the best place for inventory management is as close to the customer as possible. Right now, "as close as possible" is the warehouse networks and sales teams of NASGW members across America.
Webinar: Listen and Learn. How Customer Feedback Increases Sales and Profits.
We know that the more you understand your customer’s needs and preferences, the better you can satisfy them and sell more. Unfortunately, our experience is that most companies do not solicit customer feedback well, or at all. In fact, during a past NASGW webinar, over 65% of respondents said they ‘sometimes’ to ‘never’ survey their customers.
President's Message: NASGW Expo & Annual Meeting on the Horizon
As we begin to hit the heat of summer, October probably seems like a long way down the road. But not at NASGW. We’re very busy working on all the arrangements and planning for the upcoming NASGW Expo and Annual Meeting, to be held the last week of October (27-30) in New Orleans. I know many of you have already booked your exhibit space, your hotel rooms and are anxious for registration information. You are in luck, registration details can be found in this issue of InSight.
I’ve avowed the importance of getting – and staying – involved in politics more than a few times in this forum in recent months; this letter includes more of the same. It’s apparent this administration has no qualms about circumventing the separation of powers, as evidenced by his brow beating of the court system to do his bidding when his agenda fails to pass through appropriate legislative channels. Make no mistake, this is their tactic – and it’s working.
President's Message: Partnership and Family, the Cornerstones of the Shooting Sports Industry
I'm not sure I should be surprised, but in the roughly four months I've been with NASGW, I've noticed an incredible level of partnership and cooperation taking place. As Pete noted in his column, it's been a busy spring with various industry events. Each of them has been an amazing experience. Each of them has been validation of a true team effort across the shooting sports industry.
Chairman's Commentary: April 2015
Another NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits has come and gone, and wow, this year’s was a great one! The Music City Center, and Nashville, Tennessee, rolled out a massive welcome mat for the NRA. In a city where big acts and outdoor concerts are commonplace, the Hank Williams Jr. NRA Country show on Broadway was the largest street performance ever in Music City USA. That, combined with the second-highest NRA Show attendance in history, 78,865, tells me people across this great country are passionate our products and our beloved Second Amendment.
NASGW Creates New Leadership Development Council
NASGW has created a new Leadership Development Council (LDC) to help develop a deeper understanding of market conditions while simultaneously building stronger relationships with key association members. Though the new advisory council will not have official authority to govern the organization, their skills and knowledge will help augment the board of directors in an effort to more effectively guide the NASGW.
President's Message: April 2015
Leadership. It’s a profound word and I’m guessing to each of you reading this, it carries a certain level of clout and meaning. But just what is leadership? I had the good fortune of taking some graduate courses on leadership a number of years back. On the first day in one of those classes, our instructor asked the group of about two-dozen students to write down our definition of leadership. Everyone had a different answer. Though our perspectives were divergent, we all agreed we “knew it when we saw it.”
Join us in Making a Difference in D.C.
You all know as well as we do, that our anti-gun rights opponents won't be giving in when it comes to new legislative or regulatory ideas designed to harm our businesses and industry. And that means we have to stay vigilant in reaching out to national decision makers with facts, stats and details that show us in the positive light we deserve.
Room Reservations Now Open for 2015 NASGW Expo
NASGW has secured room blocks at two hotel properties within walking distance of the Ernest Morial Convention Center. Once these room blocks are full, attendees will be responsible for securing rooms on their own. New Orleans also has a number of other options, all within walking distance of the Convention Center. There are no contracted rates no special room blocks at these locations, but some possible nearby suggestions are available at the link.
Chairman's Commentary: March 2015
Spring is thankfully here! Even though winter seemed to hang around, it seems only yesterday we were all at SHOT Show. That drives home the point that it's time to begin making plans for the upcoming 42nd NASGW Expo & Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA.
President's Message: February 2015
This summer, it will have been 239 years since a small group of brave men put pen to paper and signed the Declaration of Independence. But what they did was more than the mere signing of a document, more than just ink on parchment. So magnanimous was this seemingly ordinary act, that they officially put their own lives at stake for their country.
NASGW Signs Multi-Industry Letter to Congress Supporting the America's Small Business Tax Relief Act
NASGW joined the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and the National Association of Wholesale-Distributors (NAW), along with 171 other organizations, in signing a letter of support for H.R. 636: America's Small Business Tax Relief Act of 2015.
Chairman’s Commentary: February 2015
While it’s clear we’re not totally “out of the woods” yet, the 2015 SHOT Show was incredibly refreshing. This year’s show was filled with more excitement and optimism than I’ve seen in several years. Actually, it reminded me how lucky we are to be a part of such a tremendous and resilient industry. Based on what I saw and heard at the show, 2015 will be a positive year for NASGW members.
Energy Outlook 2015: Electricity Generation
Several influencers, including environmental concerns, come into play when forecasting 2015 energy price trends. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations are impacting today’s volatile energy markets.
President's Message: January 2015
Those of you in my age bracket may remember the Carol Burnett Show in which Carol would close out each segment with a brief song that had the following lyrics, “It’s so nice we had this time together….”
I wanted to express my sincere thanks to all of you, our members, for a great experience as President of NASGW. It has been a pleasure working with and for so many genuine people and for an industry that prides itself on entrepreneurial spirit, dedication and commitment.
Chairman's Commentary: January 2015
January means the SHOT Show and most of you are just returning from this annual event. As expected there were many positives, a few negatives and a couple “I don’t knows…” The SHOT Show helps me to focus on what’s happening in our industry and what we can expect for the coming year. I look upon 2015 with a full glass and a year for great opportunity.

Chairman’s Commentary: December 2014
With the ever occurring changes in our industry, our customers and retailers are constantly evaluating their current relationships with each other including their suppliers, i.e., us. There’s no better time for us to be sure we’re continuing to be a valuable partner in the supply chain, even beyond our ability to offer products.

Well it’s nearly time to head out to Little Rock for NASGW’s 41st Annual Meeting and Expo. I for one find this three day event extremely valuable. The business climate for hunting and firearms products has changed dramatically to what is being called the “new normal”. Now more than ever we need to keep abreast with the ever changing industry business and economy.

Chairman's Commentary: August 2014
Thank God for August! When I was much younger, August was always the cruelest month to me. (not April) August meant putting away the trap guns and going back to school. At this stage of my life August represents a welcome transition into the most wonderful time of the year. No, not Christmas, not just yet: when I think of the most wonderful time of the year—I think of dove season!

Chairman’s Commentary: June 2014
I've noticed with increasing frequency that the trade press and individuals mentioning the "new norm," "new normal" and "we are going to have to sell again." That means a whole lot of things for all of us. Whether is be a retailer, distributor or manufacturer, we probably should pay more attention to our business operations especially in the area of margin erosion.
