Chairman’s Commentary: September 2014
Well it’s nearly time to head out to Little Rock for NASGW’s 41st Annual Meeting and Expo. I for one find this three day event extremely valuable. The business climate for hunting and firearms products has changed dramatically to what is being called the “new normal”. Now more than ever we need to keep abreast with the ever changing industry business and economy.
NSSF Welcomes NASGW as Sponsor of 2015 Shot Show U
The premier event for firearms retailers and range operators, SHOT Show University is always a sellout. Scheduled for Jan. 19, 2015, the day before the show opens, SHOT Show University will begin with an opening address from renowned executive coach Dr. Linda Talley. From there, University attendees will attend a series of classes in one of four educational tracks: ATF Compliance, Drive Your Sales, Retailing 101 and Veteran Retailer. The day will conclude with a presentation from Afterburner Inc., business performance and planning experts.
Chairman's Commentary: August 2014
Thank God for August! When I was much younger, August was always the cruelest month to me. (not April) August meant putting away the trap guns and going back to school. At this stage of my life August represents a welcome transition into the most wonderful time of the year. No, not Christmas, not just yet: when I think of the most wonderful time of the year—I think of dove season!

I've noticed with increasing frequency that the trade press and individuals mentioning the "new norm," "new normal" and "we are going to have to sell again." That means a whole lot of things for all of us. Whether is be a retailer, distributor or manufacturer, we probably should pay more attention to our business operations especially in the area of margin erosion.

NASGW recently donated $20,000 to the Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA) and joins with other shooting sports companies and organizations that support the cause of helping disabled veterans and injured active duty military recover their confidence in the future through active participation in outdoor sports.

At its spring Board meeting held during the NRA Convention in St. Louis, the Board of Directors of the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) voted to donate $50,000 ($25,000 each) to the NRA and the NRA-ILA.
NASGW Members Donate to the NRA Life of Duty Program
Several NASGW members recently participated in a program supporting the NRA Life of Duty program that serves and supports individuals who work to protect and defend the safety of the American people. A total of $37,000 was raised to provide funds for a special NRA membership category for US military personnel.

Special Bulletin from NASGW: CMV Cell Phone Use and Hours of Service Regulations
January 3, 2012, a new set of federal regulations go into effect prohibiting the use of hand-held cell phones by drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMV) in interstate commerce. Also changes to the federal Hours of Service regulations will go into effect in 2013.

According to an article in USA TODAY, along with millions of Kindles, Angry Birds and gift cards, Santa left a record number of guns under Americans' Christmas trees, especially in Kentucky, according to FBI statistics on background checks. Click here to read article.

NASGW Members Score Well in Firearms Inspections
At a recent meeting with representatives of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, NASGW Board members were provided recent statistics on inspections of wholesaler member locations by ATF. The Bureau conducted over 10,500 inspections between 2008-2010, thirty six of which were firearms wholesalers (FY 2008-2010).

California Halts Manufacturer from Prohibiting Online Retailers’ Sales for Less than MSRP
Under California’s antitrust law, it is unlawful for a manufacturer to require, or agree with, a wholesaler-distributor or other reseller to resell the manufacturer’s product only at a minimum price or at a set price. This demonstrates that federal antitrust law does not preempt state antitrust law. Here are the details.
