This year has been an electrifying one for the Firearms Industry with talk of new legislation, defense budget cuts, and surging consumer demand forcing industry participants to carefully consider what the future will bring and how they can capitalize on the current market environment. Manufacturers of civilian-facing products have enjoyed sales channels being wiped clean by consumer demand while investors have wondered where sales will level off, what appropriate valuations are, and how to quantify the risks associated with this volatility as well as public perceptions of the industry.

As part of the association’s 40th Anniversary celebration, the NASGW sponsored a Back in the Day Contest wherein the Association asked its members to share their stories of what it was like to be a wholesaler, manufacturer or rep 40 years ago and beyond. The Grand Prize Winner of the contest was NASGW distributor member Sports South which is headquartered in Shreveport, LA.

While the motivations for gun ownership are many, the driving forces behind the purchase of firearms can most often be categorized as protection or sport. These motives are rarely mutually exclusive, as the desire for safety and adventure typically coexist in varying proportions. Fortunately, selecting the proper gun can deliver both experiences. In the current economic and political environment, investors face a similar decision-making process with respect to companies in the firearms and shooting sports industries.

NASGW recently donated $20,000 to the Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA) and joins with other shooting sports companies and organizations that support the cause of helping disabled veterans and injured active duty military recover their confidence in the future through active participation in outdoor sports.

Maserin Coltellerie has been producing knives since 1960 in Maniago, Italy, a city that is known as "the city of knives". Our father Fervido founded the company. He was born in 1934 and started working at the age of 14 as a worker in a factory that produced knives, scissors and tools for agriculture.

At its spring Board meeting held during the NRA Convention in St. Louis, the Board of Directors of the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) voted to donate $50,000 ($25,000 each) to the NRA and the NRA-ILA.

Several NASGW members recently participated in a program supporting the NRA Life of Duty program that serves and supports individuals who work to protect and defend the safety of the American people. A total of $37,000 was raised to provide funds for a special NRA membership category for US military personnel.

January 3, 2012, a new set of federal regulations go into effect prohibiting the use of hand-held cell phones by drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMV) in interstate commerce. Also changes to the federal Hours of Service regulations will go into effect in 2013.

6/16/2011    NASGW Members Score Well in Firearms Inspections

At a recent meeting with representatives of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, NASGW Board members were provided recent statistics on inspections of wholesaler member locations by ATF. The Bureau conducted over 10,500 inspections between 2008-2010, thirty six of which were firearms wholesalers (FY 2008-2010).

4/4/2011    California Halts Manufacturer from Prohibiting Online Retailers’ Sales for Less than MSRP

Under California’s antitrust law, it is unlawful for a manufacturer to require, or agree with, a wholesaler-distributor or other reseller to resell the manufacturer’s product only at a minimum price or at a set price. This demonstrates that federal antitrust law does not preempt state antitrust law. Here are the details.
